Visually impaired artists and their impact

Image
Visually impaired people are often able to create art using their other senses and a variety of tools and techniques. For example, many artists use braille to write and draw, utilizing their sense of touch to create intricate and detailed works of art. Others use audio or tactile feedback to create digital art on a computer, relying on their sense of hearing or touch to navigate and create within art software. Additionally, assistive technologies such as screen readers and text-to-speech software can be utilized by visually impaired artists to access and create art on the computer. Physical art can also be created using specialized tools and techniques, such as raised line drawings which can be felt with the fingertips, embossing which creates a 3D effect, and sculpting with clay or other materials which allows artists to form shapes and textures through touch. Into the Darkness…

Image
Last Saturday the seesaw team reunited once again before the week of Christmas. As a Christmas gift, each member was offered to experience pure darkness for 100 minutes. All seven members went into a maze-like room that had no light and was tasked to successfully come out without sight. This was the first time each member faced a challenge to this scale. Surprisingly, all members agreed to go in because all of us thought that it was the bare minimum we could do as a group that helps the visually impaired.  Throughout the 100-minute duration, there were many instances where members felt fear. The first instance was at the beginning of the 100-minute duration. As soon as the doors unlocked, each member thought about whether or not they were actually going to be able to complete this task. Specifically, I felt anxious. I wanted to see light as soon as possible. But after a series of deep breaths, I was able to push through. I constantly justified myself on being able to complete thi...

Startups

In the current status quo, recognition for blind individuals is a very rare thing to see. Especially in more conservative countries like South Korea, specific facilities that help visually impaired individuals to live a good life are lacking significantly. However, it is not a fact that no action is been taking in our society. There are many startup companies that are actively beginning this journey to enhance the lives of the visually impaired. One prominent company is Aira. This startup provides a visual interpreter to individuals who are visually impaired. The system is then paired with wearables like Vuzix or Google Glass so that the smartphone can provide real-time feedback on surroundings through a human agent with a sensor that detects the surroundings.  Another prominent company is Wayfinder, this company mainly focuses on transportation. Visually impaired individuals have a hard time traversing through cities. In response to this setback, Wayfinder provides a digital navig...

Breaking social barriers within the visually impaired community

Image
When we frequently watch society and its development, we have the propensity to categorize growth-related factors using limited lenses like the economy and environment. While breaking down social barriers within minorities is important when it comes to a developing state, many people are unaware of this despite the fact that such characteristics are somewhat of an objective measure of a successful society. More particular, the current quo creates an even wider social divide within society because the visually impaired group does not receive adequate support from the general public. Given that this is assumed to be accurate, a disconnected society is finally produced. But according to recent studies, the best method to treat people who are visually impaired with respect and concern is to be courteous to them in order to break down social barriers within society. There are specific ways for the world community to express its gratitude. Ask if a person needs any help  This is the firs...
